Allahabad is a large city in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The name is a Persian phrase meaning "settled by God." The city stands at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers, and is a holy site to Hindus. It also has had political significance as a center for government offices, as the home of the Nehru family, and as a political center of the [[Indian National Congress]].

[[Alfred Percy Sinnett]] lived for most months of the year in Allahabad, as it was the home of the [[The Pioneer (periodical)|''The Pioneer's'']] main offices. From early July until September, during the hot, humid monsoon season, the Sinnetts moved to [[Simla, India|Simla]] for its milder climate, as did many of the British residents. When [[Helena Petrovna Blavatsky]] and [[Henry Steel Olcott]] first visited the Sinnetts in Simla, APS met them at the railway station in Allahabad, and they all traveled the rest of the way by cart, as no rail line yet ran to Simla.
